Hayward Perflex EC65 DE Filter Not Clearing the Water? Causes and Fixes (W3EC65A)
The Hayward Perflex EC65 is one of those filters people either love or fight with. When it's set up right, a W3EC65A will polish water better than most cartridge filters twice its size. When it isn't, you get cloudy water, DE blowing back into the pool, and pressure that climbs way too fast.
Here's what usually goes wrong with a Perflex EC65, and what actually fixes it.
Why is my Perflex EC65 not clearing the water?
Nine times out of ten it's a DE problem, not a filter problem. Either there isn't enough DE coating the flex tubes, or the coating got knocked off and nobody put a fresh charge in.
The Perflex design uses flexible tubes instead of grids. DE powder clings to those tubes and does the real filtering. Strip that coating away and you're basically running water through bare tubing.
- Too little DE added after the last cleaning
- Bumping too often, which sheds the coating faster than it rebuilds
- A torn or split flex tube letting water bypass the filtering surface
- Air trapped in the tank, so part of the tube nest never gets used
Start by adding the DE dose Hayward lists for your size filter, run the pump for a full turnover, and see where the water sits the next morning. A lot of "my EC65 isn't working" calls end right there.
What does the bump handle actually do?
Bumping shakes the dirty DE off the flex tubes and redistributes it. It's not backwashing and it doesn't replace adding new DE.
Pump off, then pump the handle five or six times, firm and full stroke. Short partial strokes don't move the tube nest enough to do anything. If the handle feels loose, mushy, or won't build resistance, the bump shaft or its seal is worn and water is slipping past instead of moving the nest.
Perflex EC65 filter pressure keeps climbing
Rising pressure means the DE coating is loaded with dirt and needs to be bumped or replaced. That's normal. What isn't normal is pressure that jumps back up within a day or two of a fresh charge.
When that happens, look at these in order:
- Oils, sunscreen, and body waste have gummed up the tubes, so DE won't release cleanly
- Someone has been adding way more DE than the filter calls for
- Scale buildup from high calcium water is coating the tube nest
- The pool itself has an algae or chemistry problem loading the filter faster than it can handle
If your water chemistry is fine and pressure still spikes fast, the tube nest needs a real cleaning, not another bump.
DE blowing back into the pool from a W3EC65A
DE coming out the returns almost always means water is getting past the flex tubes somewhere. The usual suspects are a split tube, a tube that has come loose at the top or bottom manifold, or a cracked nest.
Pull the tank apart and look at every tube in daylight. Splits tend to show up near the ends where the tubes flex the most. One bad tube is enough to send a cloud of DE straight through.
Also check the tank o-ring and clamp before you blame the tubes. A poor seal at the clamp band can let unfiltered water sneak by and look like the same problem.
How do you deep clean a Perflex EC65?
Once or twice a season, take the W3EC65A apart and clean the tube nest by hand. Bumping alone won't remove oils or scale.
- Shut the pump off and release all pressure at the air relief valve
- Open the clamp band and lift the tank off
- Hose the tube nest down from top to bottom until the water runs clear
- Soak the nest in a filter cleaner made for DE filters if it feels slick or greasy
- For scale, use a diluted acid soak, rinse well, and never mix cleaners
- Reassemble with a clean, lightly lubricated o-ring, then add a fresh full charge of DE
Take a picture before you pull anything apart. It saves a lot of guessing when you put it back together.
Repair the EC65 or replace it?
Individual tubes, o-rings, and bump parts are worth replacing on a filter that's otherwise solid. A cracked tank, a warped clamp seat, or a tube nest where half the tubes are shot is a different story.
By the time you buy a full nest, a bump assembly, and seals, you're often close to the price of a new W3EC65A anyway, and the new one comes with a fresh tank and warranty. If your filter is more than ten years old and you're rebuilding most of it, replacing usually makes more sense.
One more thing worth checking: filter size. A 27 sq ft Perflex EC65 is sized for a specific range of pool volume and flow. If your pump was upgraded and the filter never was, you'll fight short cycles and fast pressure climbs forever.
