People call us about this one a lot. They want to run the pool from their phone, they start shopping, and they hit two Hayward names that sound almost identical. The OmniHub (HLOMNIHUB) and the OmniLogic both do app control, but they are built for different pools.

Here is the plain version of what separates them, so you can pick without guessing.

What is the Hayward OmniHub?

The OmniHub is a smaller, app-based automation system meant to add smart control to a pool that already has decent equipment on it. You keep your existing pump, heater, and salt system, and the HLOMNIHUB becomes the brain that schedules and controls them.

It talks to Hayward variable speed pumps and salt chlorinators over a communication cable, and it handles a modest number of relay-driven items like a light or a booster pump. It is a retrofit product first. That is the whole point of it.

What's the difference between OmniHub and OmniLogic?

Size and capacity, mostly. The OmniLogic is a full-size automation panel with more built-in relays, more valve actuator outputs, and room to grow with expansion hardware. The OmniHub does less on purpose and costs a lot less because of it.

A quick way to think about it:

  • OmniHub (HLOMNIHUB): simpler pools, a pump, a heater, a salt cell, a light, maybe a water feature. Retrofit onto what you already own.
  • OmniLogic: bigger builds with a spa, multiple valve actuators, several relay loads, chemistry automation, and future add-ons.
  • Both use the same Hayward app experience, so the day to day feel on your phone is similar.

If you sketch out everything you want automated and the list runs past a handful of items, you have outgrown the OmniHub before you even buy it.

Will the OmniHub work with my existing pump and heater?

Usually yes, if the gear is reasonably modern Hayward. Hayward variable speed pumps and Hayward salt systems with a communication port connect directly, which is where the OmniHub gets most of its value. Heaters with a standard two-wire thermostat connection are typically fine too.

Older single speed pumps still work, but they just get switched on and off through a relay. You do not get speed scheduling out of a pump that has no speeds. And mixed-brand equipment gets messier, so check what you actually have on the pad before ordering.

Things worth confirming first:

  • Is your pump a Hayward VS model with a comm port, or a basic on/off pump?
  • Does your heater accept external control, or is it a standalone unit only?
  • Do you have a salt chlorinator you want the HLOMNIHUB to manage?
  • How many valve actuators does the pool use, if any?

Can I install the HLOMNIHUB myself?

Mounting the enclosure and running the low voltage comm cable is within reach for a handy owner. The high voltage side is not a place to experiment. Anything involving the breaker panel, bonding, or hard-wired relay loads should go to a licensed electrician or a pool pro.

The part that trips most people up is not the wiring anyway. It is the network setup. The system needs a solid Wi-Fi signal at the equipment pad, and equipment pads are usually the worst spot on the property for signal. If your phone struggles out there, plan on an access point or an extender before you blame the OmniHub.

Common OmniHub setup problems

Most calls we get about a new automation system not working come down to a few basics rather than a bad board.

  • App won't connect: weak Wi-Fi at the pad, or the system was never fully registered during setup. Check signal strength at the panel first.
  • Pump not responding: comm cable landed on the wrong terminals, or the pump is still set to run in local mode instead of external control.
  • Salt cell shows no output: flow switch, cell condition, or an address setting mismatch, not the automation itself.
  • Schedules run at odd times: time zone and clock settings got skipped during the initial configuration.

Work through those before you start swapping parts. The HLOMNIHUB is not usually the failure point on a fresh install.

Is the OmniHub worth it over a plain timer?

If all you do is run a single speed pump eight hours a day, a mechanical timer is honestly fine. The OmniHub earns its money when you have a variable speed pump and a heater, because you can dial in low speed run times, bump up for cleaning, and stop heating an empty pool. That is where the power bill actually moves.

It also saves the trip to the equipment pad every time something needs adjusting, which matters more than people expect in July.

So which one should you buy?

Pick the OmniHub HLOMNIHUB if you have a pool, a Hayward variable speed pump, and a short list of things to control. Pick the OmniLogic if you have a spa with valve actuators, several relay loads, or plans to keep adding equipment. Buying the smaller system and hitting its limit next season costs more than buying right the first time.
