Hayward Navigator Pro Not Moving or Cleaning? Troubleshooting Guide (W3925ADC)

A pool cleaner that just sits there in the deep end is one of the most common calls we get in July. If your Hayward Navigator Pro is not moving, the cleaner itself is usually fine. The problem is almost always somewhere upstream in the plumbing.

Work through these checks in order. Start with the free stuff, then move to parts.

Why is my Hayward Navigator Pro not moving?

Nine times out of ten, a W3925ADC that stopped moving is not getting enough suction. The turbine inside the cleaner runs on water flow, so anything that chokes flow will stop it cold.

Check these first:

• Empty the pump strainer basket and every skimmer basket.
• Look at your filter gauge. If pressure has climbed roughly 8 to 10 PSI above your clean starting pressure, backwash or clean the filter.
• If you have a variable speed pump, raise the RPM. Cleaner speeds set too low are probably the single most common reason a suction cleaner quits moving.
• Close down other suction lines so most of the pull goes to the cleaner line.

How do I check the hose for a leak?

A cracked hose section lets the pump pull air instead of water, and the cleaner slows down or stops. Pull the hose out and look at each section in daylight.

Split cuffs, hairline cracks near the swivel ends, and sections that have gone stiff and chalky from sun exposure are the usual offenders. Replace bad sections one at a time instead of buying a whole new hose set. Also confirm your hose is still the right length. It should reach the farthest point of the pool plus about a foot, and no more. Too much hose makes the W3925ADC wander in circles and tangle.

Why does my Navigator Pro get stuck in the same corner?

Getting stuck in one spot usually points to the steering mechanism or worn wear parts on the bottom of the cleaner. The SmartDrive system needs a clean, unobstructed turbine to change direction on schedule.

Flip the cleaner over and look for:

• Pebbles, acorns, or hair wrapped around the turbine or its bearings.
• Wear shoes and wings that have worn thin or curled up.
• A cracked or missing flap that lets water bypass the turbine.
• Debris packed into the throat of the cleaner where water enters.

Spin the turbine by hand. It should turn freely with no grinding. If it drags or wobbles, that is your problem.

Why won't my Navigator Pro climb the walls?

Weak wall climbing on the W3925ADC is a suction and wear issue, not a defect. As the wings and shoes wear down, the cleaner loses grip on the surface and slides back toward the floor.

Bump the pump speed up first and see if climbing improves. If it does, you had a flow problem. If it still slides, the wear parts are due. On a concrete or gunite pool the rough surface eats those parts faster than vinyl does, so plan on replacing them more often.

Which parts wear out first on the W3925ADC?

The parts that touch the pool surface go first. Wings, wear shoes, and the turbine are considered normal replacement items, not failures. Hose sections come next, especially the ones closest to the cleaner that flex the most.

Keeping a spare set of wings and shoes on the shelf is cheap insurance. Swapping them out before they are completely gone also protects the body of the cleaner from getting scuffed up.

Repair or replace: what makes sense?

If the housing is solid and only the wear parts are shot, repair it. Parts cost a fraction of a new unit and the job takes about twenty minutes with no tools beyond a screwdriver.

Replacement makes more sense when the body is cracked, the turbine housing is worn out of round, or you are adding up several parts at once on a cleaner that is already many seasons old. At that point you are rebuilding most of the machine anyway. One last note. Make sure you are matching the cleaner to your pool surface. The W3925ADC is built for concrete and gunite. The vinyl version uses a different tire and shoe setup, and running the wrong one shortens the life of both the cleaner and the liner.
