Hayward MaxFlo XE vs. MaxFlo VS: Which Pump Should You Buy? (W3SP2315X20 vs SP23115VSP)
People call us about this one a lot. Two Hayward pumps, same MaxFlo family, similar footprint, prices in the same neighborhood. So which one goes on the pad?
Short version: the MaxFlo XE (W3SP2315X20) is a high efficiency pump you set and mostly leave alone. The MaxFlo VS (SP23115VSP) is a true variable speed pump you can dial in to any speed you want. Which one is right depends on how much control you actually want and what your utility charges you.
What is the difference between the MaxFlo XE and the MaxFlo VS?
The main difference is speed control. The MaxFlo VS lets you program specific RPMs across a wide range, so you can run very slow for filtering and ramp up for cleaning or heating. The MaxFlo XE W3SP2315X20 gives you preset speed settings instead of full RPM by RPM programming.
Both are far cheaper to run than an old single speed pump. Both are 2.25 total HP. Both fit the same 2 inch plumbing most MaxFlo installs already have, which matters if you are swapping an older pump out.
Which one saves more on your power bill?
The MaxFlo VS will usually save more, because you can run it at genuinely low speeds for long hours. Water moving slowly through a filter is where almost all of the savings come from.
That said, the gap is smaller than people expect. If you are replacing a single speed pump, either one is going to cut your pump energy use dramatically. The XE gets you most of the way there with less fiddling.

Is the MaxFlo XE compatible with pool automation?
Not in the same way the VS is. The MaxFlo VS is built to talk to Hayward automation systems like OmniLogic and OmniHub so the panel can call for different speeds. The XE is a more standalone pump.
If you already run Hayward automation, or you plan to add it in the next few years, that alone usually settles the question. Buy the VS. If you are running a simple time clock and have no plans to change that, the XE is a clean fit.
Will either pump fit my existing plumbing?
Both use the same MaxFlo style base and 2 inch union connections, so a swap from an older MaxFlo is usually straightforward. A few things worth checking before you order:
- Measure your suction and discharge center height. If the old pump sat lower, you may need to redo a short section of pipe.
- Confirm your voltage. Both run on 230V, and the XE is dual voltage capable.
- Check your breaker size against the pump label before you wire anything.
- Have new unions and a fresh lid o-ring on hand. Reusing old ones is how a new pump ends up leaking on day one.
What about repair versus replace on an older MaxFlo?
If your current MaxFlo is under about six years old and the problem is a seal, a basket, or a housing, fix it. Those parts are cheap. If the motor is shot on a single speed MaxFlo, that is your moment to move up, because a new motor costs a real fraction of a new efficient pump and saves you nothing on power.
So which MaxFlo should you actually buy?
Most standard residential pools with a time clock and no spa will be happy with the MaxFlo XE. It is simpler, it costs less, and it still cuts your pump energy way down.
Go with the MaxFlo VS if you have automation, a spa, solar heat, expensive electricity, or you just want to control the pump speed yourself. Neither is a bad pump. They are aimed at different owners.
