Hayward AquaRite W3AQR9 vs. W3AQR15: Which Salt Chlorinator Size Do You Need?
We get this call a lot. Somebody wants to switch to salt, they find the Hayward AquaRite line, and then they hit a wall picking between the W3AQR9 and the W3AQR15. The boxes look identical. The prices are only a couple hundred dollars apart. So what actually changes?
Short version: the difference is the TurboCell that comes in the box, and that cell decides how much chlorine the system can make in a day.
What is the difference between the W3AQR9 and the W3AQR15?
The W3AQR9 ships with a TurboCell rated for pools up to 25,000 gallons. The W3AQR15 ships with a larger cell rated up to 40,000 gallons. Everything else about the two systems is the same idea: same AquaRite control box, same wall mount, same basic operation.
Think of the control box as the brain and the cell as the engine. A bigger cell has more plate surface inside it, so it converts more salt into chlorine per hour of runtime. That is really the whole story behind W3AQR9 vs W3AQR15.
Which size do I need for my pool?
Match the rating to your pool volume, then leave yourself some room. Hayward publishes a maximum gallon rating for each cell, and that number assumes decent runtime and normal conditions.
- Pool under about 15,000 gallons: the smaller W3AQR3 is usually enough
- Pool around 18,000 to 24,000 gallons: the W3AQR9 fits well
- Pool at 25,000 gallons or above: go with the W3AQR15
- Pool with heavy sun, a spa, or a lot of swimmers: size up regardless of the gallon count
If you are right on the line at 25,000 gallons, buy the W3AQR15. Running a cell at 100 percent output every single day to barely keep up is the fastest way to wear it out.
Why does oversizing save money?
A salt cell has a limited number of operating hours in it. The harder you push it, the sooner you are shopping for a replacement cell.
Put a W3AQR15 on a 22,000 gallon pool and it might cruise at 40 or 50 percent output. Put a W3AQR9 on that same pool in August and you could be pinned at 90 percent just to hold chlorine. Same water, very different lifespan. The extra cost up front on the W3AQR15 often pays for itself the first time you skip a cell replacement.
Can I put a bigger cell on the same control box later?
Yes, in most cases. The AquaRite control box lets you tell it which TurboCell is connected, so people do upgrade the cell without replacing the whole system. That is worth knowing if you already own an AquaRite and just want more output.
That said, if you are buying new anyway, it is cleaner and usually cheaper to buy the right complete system the first time instead of buying a W3AQR9 now and a bigger cell in two years.
Signs your salt system is undersized
An undersized chlorinator does not throw an obvious error. It just quietly loses the fight. Watch for these:
- Output is set at 80 to 100 percent all summer and chlorine still reads low
- You are adding liquid chlorine or tabs to keep up, which defeats the point of salt
- Algae shows up after a hot stretch or a pool party
- You extended pump runtime and it barely helped
If two or three of those sound familiar and your salt level and pump runtime are both fine, the cell is probably too small for the pool.
What both systems need to work right
Neither the W3AQR9 nor the W3AQR15 is a set it and forget it box. A few things matter for both:
- Keep salt in the range Hayward calls for, usually around 3,200 ppm
- Run the pump long enough, 8 hours or more in peak season for most pools
- Keep stabilizer in range so the chlorine you make actually sticks around
- Inspect the cell once a season and acid wash it only if you see scale
- Install the cell after the filter and heater, with the flow switch upstream of it
W3AQR9 vs W3AQR15: the quick answer
Buy the W3AQR9 if your pool is comfortably under 25,000 gallons, gets moderate sun, and you are not running a spa off the same system. Buy the W3AQR15 if you are at or near 25,000 gallons, if your pool sits in full sun all day, or if you just want the cell to loaf along instead of straining.
When people call us undecided between the two, we point them at the W3AQR15 more often than not. The regret usually runs one direction, and it is not from buying too much capacity.
